What does it mean that there will be wars and rumors of wars before the end times?
Answer: In part of Jesus’ response to the disciples’ question, “Tell us . . . what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3), Jesus replied, “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars” (Matthew 24:6). Whenever there is an explosion of conflict, especially in the vicinity of Israel, or rumors of war between Russia, China and America, many people begin to wonder if the new war is a sign of the end times. Matthew 24:6 Jesus continued, “… See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet…”
Understanding the context of what Jesus’ said about “wars and rumors of wars” he was referring to the times during the tribulation.
In the book of Revelation, John is shown a vision in which he sees Jesus break seals and open scrolls. When the first four seals are broken they reveal different colored horses and release certain cataclysmic events. These events parallel what Jesus explained to his disciples about the end times on the Mount of Olives. He referred to these events as “The Beginning of Sorrows.” By comparing these two accounts you can understand what Jesus was talking about when he said there would be wars and rumors of wars.
JESUS MOUNT OF OLIVES: And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.7For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: Matthew 24:6-7.
JOHN’S VISION: And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. Revelation 6:4.
